Match Report

Tooting and Mitcham United suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat at Imperial Fields as a second-half header from Nick Thumwood sealed all three points for the visitors in front of a bumper crowd of 323 spectators.

The Terrors started brightly and took a deserved lead after just 10 minutes when Tim Obiscanya rose highest to powerfully head home a pinpoint corner from Conor Melody. Tooting thought they had doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Melody’s looping free-kick from near the touchline sailed straight into the net, only for the referee to controversially rule it out for a push in the penalty area.

The turning point, however, came just before the halftime whistle, when the visitors found an equaliser from the penalty spot. The referee spotted a foul in the box, allowing Nick Thumwood to step up and calmly convert.

Tooting came out firing after the break, seeing a header cleared off the line before Freddie Jones saw his goal-bound effort brilliantly turned away by visiting goalkeeper Pillinger. The inability to make possession count proved costly around the hour mark when Thumwood struck again, ghosting into the box to nod home from close range and turn the game on its head.

Despite a handful of half-chances, the visitors held firm. In the dying minutes, it was Tooting goalkeeper Ollie Pain who pulled off a magnificent save to deny Thumwood his hat-trick, but the Terrors ultimately fell just short despite a spirited, battling performance.
