Match Report
The season so far had been very rewarding for Tooting & Mitcham going into this one; challenging hard near the top of the table, unbeaten away from Imperial Fields, and making progress in the regional cups thanks to two very good away wins in the build-up; perhaps it was inevitable, then, that a booby-trap was lurking on the horizon – and Camberley Town sprung it here to some extent, with the struggling and unfancied visitors – beaten 5-1 on their last visit to play the Terrors here – having much the better of a scrappy afternoon, and probably feeling they should have taken all three points home with them, rather than the solitary one they managed after an uninspiring goalless draw.
To be fair to the Terrors, there were mitigating factors at play – such as the injuries, illnesses and general unavailabilty that left several of our regular starters out of the squad. Emmanuel Bestman started for the first time this campaign, ploughing a lonely furrow up front, and Conor Melody found himself in an unfamiliar full-back role as gaps needed to be plugged to the best of manager Jamie Byatt’s abilities. Tooting’s best (only?) chance came early, when Dom West got down low to prevent a snap-shot sneaking in at the near post; thereafter, it was Toby McKimm who was much the busier keeper, saving well from Josh Ewing and Shane Qoloni either side of half-time, and breathing sighs of relief when efforts from Dwayne Clarke and Mikey Milchev-Szczepaniak flashed across the face of goal.
